World Open: Hossein Vafaei defeats Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final 16

Hossein Vafaei’s unexpected victory in the round of 16 in China has eliminated Ronnie O’Sullivan from the World Open.

The match went to a decisive frame in Yushan thanks to a masterful break of 125 in the eighth game, which tied the score at 4-4.

However, in an exciting last frame, O’Sullivan missed a critical black, allowing Vafaei to return to the table and win 5–4.

In the final eight, the Iranian will take on Ding Jinhui.

“He’s my hero,” Vafaei exclaimed. “Just playing against O’Sullivan is a dream come true, never mind winning.”

In other news, Kyren Wilson and 2019 World Open champion Judd Trump will square off in the quarterfinals following Trump’s 5-3 victory against David Lilley.
