In NBA lingo, the term “perfect fit” is often used, but when it comes to Daniel Gafford and the Dallas Mavericks—who acquired Gafford from the Washington Wizards at the trade deadline—we are genuinely speaking of perfection.
Following his 9-for-9 performance from the field in Monday’s 127-92 victory over the Bulls, Gafford has now made 28 straight field goals in his past four games for Dallas. That’s a record for the NBA during the play-by-play era dating back to 1997–98, and it’s getting close to Wilt Chamberlain’s all-time mark of 35 consecutive makes.
Although Gafford is not a household name, he is the exact kind of player who has the ability to shatter what is thought to be one of Chamberlain’s more unbreakable records.
ForTo begin with, you cannot be a jump shooter and expect to make 35 consecutive baskets. Jump shooting is not Gafford’s forte. As of Monday, 302 of his 362 attempts this season had come from inside five feet, where he had converted at a 75% clip. Of his 362 efforts this season, 347 had come from inside nine feet.
