Update on Thiago as Cody Gakpo receives encouraging news from Jurgen Klopp

Thiago Alcantara has experienced a second setback in his efforts to make a comeback from hip surgery, according to Jurgen Klopp.

However, he is optimistic that the Spanish player and Stefan Bajcetic, who has also had a fresh injury setback following his most recent recovery, will be available again after the international break.

Since having surgery in May, Thiago has not played for Liverpool, and attempts to resume full training have already been foiled twice by further fitness setbacks.

After surviving an adductor injury, Bajcetic participated in victories over LASK and Leicester before being forced to sit out once more.

In response to a question on both before the team’s trip to Brighton on Sunday, Klopp said: “For him (Thiago), it’s really irritating. Two more setbacks in the recuperation process.

“Not much, but enough to remove him from the pitch once more. Although obviously not the same injury, rather similar.

And as annoying for Stefan Bajcetic as it is. Was there, played for a while, and then experienced something different. Sometimes that is how it is after long-term injuries.

I won’t put any pressure on [when they can return] because I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see if they return after the international break. We hope it would be cool.

The manager did, however, have better news on Cody Gakpo, who left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a knee brace last weekend.

The Dutchman is already closing in on a return to action, and is likely to be joined by Conor Bradley, who has been out since suffering an injury in pre-season.

Klopp added: “Cody has a good chance that he will be back [after the break]. Already out of the brace, walks normal around here.
