Late Saturday night at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, a production crew member working ahead of the Sunday Night Football – Steelers vs Packers broadcast suffered a devastating fall of about 50 feet from the main scoreboard to a mid-level catwalk, and is now hospitalized in critical condition.

What happened

Around 10:00 p.m. local time, emergency services were dispatched to Acrisure Stadium’s North Shore location after a call reported a male worker had fallen while installing production equipment.  According to officials from Pittsburgh Public Safety, the man fell approximately 50 feet from the scoreboard to a catwalk below.

Rescue crews reached him on the catwalk, stabilized him, then used a rope system and a Stokes basket to lower him safely to an ambulance waiting below.  He was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. Officials said he suffered severe injuries, mainly to his lower extremities.

A spokesperson for the stadium confirmed that the injured person was a crew member installing production equipment ahead of the broadcast.

Aftermath / context

  • The incident did not lead to the cancellation of the game; the Steelers-Packers matchup proceeded as scheduled the next day.
  • Investigators from Pittsburgh Police used drones to document the scene of the fall.
  • At this time no further public updates have been made on the worker’s condition beyond “critical”.

Why it matters

This incident underscores the often unseen risks borne by production and facilities crews in major sports venues — particularly during high-profile events like Sunday Night Football. Despite all planning and safety protocols, working at height around live production installs remains hazardous.

The fact that the fall was from a major scoreboard structure (50 ft) and that the worker landed on an intermediate catwalk likely prevented what could have been a fatal fall. The swift response by emergency crews to stabilize and lower him is a testament to preparedness, but also serves as a reminder of the ever-present need for rigorous safety oversight.

Our thoughts

To the injured crew member and their loved ones: our thoughts and prayers are with you during this extremely difficult time. May the recovery be as smooth as possible and your resilience strong.

For everyone else in production and maintenance roles at sports venues, this is a sober reminder to always double-check safety protocols, use proper fall protection, and treat every work site with the seriousness it deserves.
