South Carolina Women’s Basketball Adds Towering Talent: 6’6” Center Madina Okot Transfers from Mississippi State

Columbia, SC – April 24, 2025

In yet another powerhouse move that further solidifies its position as one of the most dominant programs in women’s college basketball, the University of South Carolina has officially landed 6-foot-6 center Madina Okot from Mississippi State.

The announcement was met with immediate excitement from fans, media, and basketball insiders who view Okot’s transfer as a major win for the Gamecocks and head coach Dawn Staley.

Okot’s arrival comes as South Carolina looks to reload after another successful season, and with expectations mounting for a national title run, the addition of an elite post player could prove to be the defining move of the offseason.

A Game-Changer in the Paint

Okot, a native of Mumias, Kenya, made an immediate impact in her freshman season at Mississippi State, averaging 11.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game in under 23 minutes of playing time.

Her size, physical presence, and international experience set her apart from most players in the country. Her 8’8” standing reach, 6’10” wingspan, and 10’3” approach height make her an elite rim protector and rebounder—a nightmare matchup for opponents.

“Madina gives our frontcourt a whole new dimension,” said Coach Staley in a statement. “She brings height, athleticism, and incredible international experience. She’s exactly the type of player who fits our culture—tough, driven, and unafraid of the big moment.”

International Pedigree

Before making her mark in the SEC, Okot was already building a strong reputation on the international stage. She played for Zetech University in Kenya and represented her nation in multiple FIBA competitions, including the FIBA 3×3 Africa Cup, where she helped Kenya secure a place in the Olympic pre-qualifiers.

She was also the only African player selected to the inaugural Women’s World Select Team at the 2023 Nike Hoop Summit and earned a spot on the 2023 FIBA Africa Women’s Basketball League All-Tournament team. Her averages of 13.8 points and 13.8 rebounds over four games solidified her status as a rising star.

“My journey started on the courts of Kenya, but I’ve always dreamed of playing at the highest levels,” said Okot in a video released by South Carolina Athletics. “Joining Coach Staley and the Gamecocks is more than a transfer—it’s a new chapter in my life and career. I’m ready to give my all to this program.”

Dawn Staley’s Masterclass in Recruiting Continues

Coach Dawn Staley has long been celebrated for her ability to identify, recruit, and develop elite talent, particularly in the post. Her track record speaks for itself, with numerous Gamecocks moving on to successful WNBA careers. Okot is the latest big-time addition in a series of strategic moves that have reshaped South Carolina’s roster this offseason.

The Gamecocks also recently landed Ta’Niya Latson, the top scorer in the nation from Florida State, further demonstrating the program’s ability to attract talent on both ends of the court. With Okot anchoring the interior and Latson lighting up the perimeter, South Carolina is poised to be more balanced and dangerous than ever.

“We’re building a team that can win in different ways,” said Staley. “Defense has always been a cornerstone for us, and with Madina, we can control the paint like few teams in the country. Add in our perimeter depth and scoring punch—we’re excited for what’s ahead.”

Eyes on Another Championship Run

South Carolina fans are already buzzing with anticipation. After reaching the Final Four in the previous season, the Gamecocks appear to be gearing up for another deep run—and potentially another national title.

Okot’s presence adds depth, length, and leadership to a team already brimming with potential. Her combination of international experience, SEC toughness, and raw physical tools make her a rare and valuable asset for a program hungry for more success.

“This is a dream come true,” said Okot. “I’ve worked hard to reach this level, and now I get to play for one of the best programs in the country. I can’t wait to get to Columbia and start working with my new teammates.”

Looking Ahead

With preseason polls sure to reflect the strength of their new-look roster, South Carolina will enter the 2025-2026 season as one of the early favorites to win the national championship. The arrival of Madina Okot is more than just a roster upgrade—it’s a defining moment in the next chapter of the Gamecocks’ basketball dynasty.

For Coach Staley and her team, the message is loud and clear: South Carolina is not just reloading—they’re building something legendary.
