 Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has urged teenage midfielder Trey Nyon to train as he bids for promotion to the senior ranks.

 Nyoni, 16, only joined the Reds and Leicester City’s youth team in the summer but has already made a big impression at Anfield. The talented midfielder is already training with Jurgen Kloppand’s first team and was even named on the bench for Sunday’s impressive 3-0 win against Brentford.

 The England Under-17 international has a big fan in  Van Dijk – and Liverpool youth coach Jay Spearing  revealed  the Reds skipper tried to give the youngster some advice after being called up to train with the seniors.

 “Virgil came up to him and congratulated him on training with them,” Spearing explained, speaking to Liverpool’s official website ahead of the Brentford game. “He said, ‘He’s got a long way to go’ and he really liked him. Virgil also came  to watch the U-18 game against Middlesbrough to see how Trey played.

 Attacking midfielder Nyoni has been in hot form for both club and development teams this season, scoring four goals and providing five assists in just 10 appearances. His rapid progress has seen him play for the under-21s recently, and last week he assisted in their 2-1 defeat against League Two side Barrow in the EFL Trophy.

 He was also part of the Liverpool squad that traveled to France to face Toulouse last week, but the teenager was ineligible to feature against the Ligue 1 side as he was not linked to the Redsand#039; Europa League team last month.

 Klopp was a big advocate of  youth promotion during his premiership at Anfield  and  welcomed many young talents into the first team picture; something that bodes well for Nyon if he can continue on his current trajectory.

 Nyon was praised by under-18s manager Marc Bridge-Wilkinson earlier this season when he scored  in the Merseyside derby against Evertonand#039; a dramatic victory against the youth team, which the Reds won 3:2.

 andquot;He had a big smile on his face and he was humming. It was a nice moment for him and it was a sweet little ending. It was a really nice moment for Trey and it was a really nice moment for the team because I thought we deserved to win that game.andquot;
