BREAKING NEWS: Nick Saban Donates Entire $15.9 Million Bonus and Sponsorship Earnings to Fund Homeless Housing in West Virginia

July 23, 2025 – Morgantown, West Virginia

In a remarkable act of philanthropy, legendary football coach Nick Saban has donated his entire $15.9 million bonus and sponsorship earnings to support the construction of a large-scale housing initiative for the homeless in his home state of West Virginia. The announcement was made Tuesday morning during an emotional press conference in Morgantown, where Saban emphasized his personal connection to the cause and his deep desire to give back to the community that raised him.

“I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up,” Saban shared. “And I knew if I ever had the means, I’d give back in a meaningful way. No one deserves to sleep on a sidewalk.”

“The Saban Shelter Initiative”

Saban’s generous contribution will fully fund the Saban Shelter Initiative, a transformative project aimed at tackling homelessness through sustainable, long-term solutions. The initiative will include the development of:

  • 150 permanent housing units

  • 300 shelter beds for transitional and emergency stays

  • Medical and mental health clinics on-site

  • Addiction recovery services

  • Career readiness and job training programs

  • Support for veterans and displaced families

The shelter will be located on a 12-acre lot just outside Morgantown, an area selected for its accessibility to nearby hospitals, transit systems, and social services.

Hometown Hero Giving Back

Though known nationally for his legendary tenure at the University of Alabama and multiple national championships, Nick Saban has never forgotten his West Virginia roots. Born in Fairmont, WV, and raised in a working-class family, Saban frequently references his humble beginnings and the values instilled in him by his parents and early mentors.

“Growing up in a coal town, I saw families fall apart because of layoffs, addiction, and lack of opportunity. Some of my childhood friends didn’t make it out. This is my way of honoring them and helping those who still struggle.”

This latest act of giving is consistent with Saban’s history of charitable work, including his Nick’s Kids Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife, Terry Saban. However, this is by far his most personal and sizable donation to date.

Widespread Praise

The sports world, political leaders, and advocacy groups across the country have praised Saban for his initiative.

Terry Saban, who has long been involved in community work alongside her husband, said, “Nick has always believed that leadership goes beyond the field. This donation is an extension of his commitment to doing what’s right.”

West Virginia Governor Sarah Bannister called the move “a historic and heartfelt investment in the people of our state,” adding, “Nick Saban has proven that true greatness isn’t just measured in wins — it’s measured in how you lift others up.”

Even longtime rival coaches, including Dabo Swinney and Kirby Smart, expressed admiration for Saban’s generosity, calling it “a model of what leadership and legacy should look like.”

Addressing a Growing Crisis

West Virginia has been hit hard by economic downturns, opioid addiction, and rising homelessness, particularly in former mining regions. According to the West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness, over 8,000 people in the state experienced homelessness in 2024, with many more on the brink due to housing insecurity.

The Saban Shelter Initiative is expected to serve more than 2,000 individuals annually, offering not just a roof, but a pathway back to stability.

A Legacy Beyond Football

Though retired from coaching, Nick Saban continues to make a profound impact. For many, this donation solidifies his legacy not just as one of the greatest coaches in college football history, but also as a compassionate leader dedicated to uplifting his community.

“My greatest wins won’t be on a scoreboard anymore,” Saban concluded. “They’ll be in the lives we help turn around.”

What Comes Next

Construction on the shelter is expected to begin in late 2025, with an anticipated opening in spring 2027. Saban has pledged ongoing support for operations and has already enlisted local businesses and former players to contribute additional funding and mentorship services.

With his $15.9 million gift, Nick Saban has once again redefined what it means to be a champion — not just on the field, but in the fight for human dignity.

For West Virginia, this isn’t just a donation. It’s hope.
