By Crimson Tide Report | May 3, 2025
In an extraordinary act of loyalty and generosity, Alabama football legend and NFL superstar Derrick Henry has made a monumental $14.8 million donation to the University of Alabama, earmarked for the renovation and modernization of Bryant-Denny Stadium, the iconic home of the Crimson Tide.
The historic gift, announced early Friday morning by Alabama Athletics Director Greg Byrne, represents the largest single donation ever made by a former Alabama athlete to the university.
“Derrick Henry is the embodiment of what it means to be a Crimson Tide legend,” Byrne said. “His donation not only honors the past but helps build the future of Alabama Football for generations to come.”
A Legacy Cemented in Crimson
Derrick Henry, the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner, rose to national stardom while wearing crimson and white. Known for his record-breaking rushing performances and punishing running style, Henry helped lead Alabama to a College Football Playoff National Championship in 2015 under coach Nick Saban.
Now, almost a decade later, Henry is giving back in a way that has left fans, teammates, and university officials in awe.
“Alabama changed my life,” Henry said during the press event held at midfield in Bryant-Denny Stadium. “This university helped me grow as a man, as a competitor, and as a leader. This is my way of saying thank you — not just to the program, but to every fan who ever cheered for me.”
“The Derrick Henry Champions Wing” Set for 2026
University officials confirmed that a significant portion of the funds will go toward creating a brand-new state-of-the-art facility within the stadium complex. Slated to open in Fall 2026, the “Derrick Henry Champions Wing” will include:
- An enhanced strength and conditioning center
- A sports science and recovery innovation lab
- Hall of Champions interactive museum space
- Expanded locker room and meeting spaces
- Public fan access areas celebrating Crimson Tide legends
Renderings of the proposed renovations were unveiled at the press conference and were met with a standing ovation from students, boosters, and alumni.
Praise from Legends and Leaders
Messages of support poured in from across the sports world.
Nick Saban, who coached Henry during his time at Alabama, said in a video message:
“Derrick has always been more than an athlete — he’s a leader. This gift reflects his heart and commitment to excellence. The Alabama family couldn’t be prouder.
NFL players and former Alabama teammates such as Tua Tagovailoa, Amari Cooper, and Quinnen Williams took to social media to salute Henry’s contribution with posts tagged #RollTideForever and #DerrickDelivers.
Fans React with Crimson Pride
Fans across Tuscaloosa and the entire college football community reacted with pride and gratitude. Local businesses lit up signs reading “Thank You, Derrick,” while students gathered at the stadium gates to witness the announcement live.
“This is more than just a donation. This is history,” said junior linebacker Reggie Foster. “Derrick’s showing all of us what it means to give back and invest in your roots.”
Building for the Next Generation
University President Dr. Stuart Bell emphasized that Henry’s gift will be transformative for future generations of athletes.
“With this generous act, Derrick is ensuring that Alabama remains at the forefront of innovation, athlete development, and fan engagement. His legacy will inspire not just football players, but students across campus.”
Looking Ahead
Construction on the Derrick Henry Champions Wing will begin in early 2026, with updates expected to follow throughout the year. A statue honoring Henry’s college career will also be installed in the stadium plaza, immortalizing the legend who gave everything — and then some — to his alma mater.
As Henry walked off the field after the announcement, he paused at the end zone, looked up to the packed student section, and said simply:
“This is home. And it always will be.”
