Real Madrid could do Liverpool a big favor in a Chelsea replay with Klopp’s successor November 22, 2023 at 1:00 p.m bookmark Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp hugs Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hugs Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi (Image: Getty Images) Liverpool hope the club will have years before Jurgen Kloppand#039;s place as club manager needs to be replaced. The German has already spent almost a decade at the club and his current deal expires in 2026. But it is entirely possible that Klopp will extend his stay again. Only time will tell. Meanwhile, the club and board have a list of potential candidates who could one day succeed Klopp as manager at Anfield. At the top of the list, one of the favorites for the role is probably Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool midfielder has done a fantastic job since taking charge of football and completely transformed his Bayer Leverkusen side. The former Liverpool midfielder has been a revelation as he guided the relegation zone side to the top of the Bundesliga last season. Impressively, he not only produced results but also played with an engaging style that saw Leverkusen score bucketloads of goals and produce free-flowing attacking football that is the talk of the Bundesliga. Not surprisingly, Alonso is eyeing not only Liverpool, but several other big European clubs, including Real Madrid. With Carlo Ancelotti likely to leave the Spanish giants at the end of the season, Alonso has so far been the favorite to replace him. With Real Madrid also being one of his former clubs, it would be a smart move. However, it seems that Alonso may not be the only and perhaps the favorite candidate to succeed Ancelotti. Real Madrid are eyeing Brightonand#039’s Roberto De Zerbi and have already started talks with the Premier League side, according to Spanish publication Sport. It must feel like déjà vu for Brighton. After all, it was only last season that another big club, Chelsea, poached Graham Potter away from the Seagulls and lured him to Stamford Bridge. However, Real Madrid will hope that if De Zerbi replaces him, they will do better than Potter’s Blues. Subscribe to our exclusive Liverpool.com newsletter! This would mean Alonso is likely to stay at Leverkusen a little longer and may even see his contract expire in 2026. A move to Real Madrid would rule out his potential move to Anfield. No one knows what the future holds, but in the coming years, if Alonso continues on the same trajectory, he would be an excellent candidate to succeed Klopp. Not only does he understand the ethos of Liverpool and the club’s high standards, he also has the footballing brains and vision to create an attractive footballing side that will entertain the Kop. Real Madrid’s loss could therefore be Liverpool’s win.
