During his tenure at Real Madrid, Raphael Varane won the Champions League four times. In contrast, Manchester United has not advanced past the quarterfinals in the tournament since 2011.
Manchester United defender Raphael Varane thinks his team has a shot at the Champions League.
United have only ever won the European Cup three times, and since reaching the final in 2011, they have won just two elimination matches. That also stands as the last time United made it to the semi-finals of a major tournament.
Despite having won the Champions League four times with the competition’s most successful side, Real Madrid, Varane believes United are credible challengers for the title this season despite his decision to leave United for Real Madrid immediately after their 2011 final defeat to Barcelona at Wembley.
Varane was asked this question at a news conference before United’s first home game in the Champions League group stage against Galatasaray. “Yes. Yes, in my opinion. That competition is tough and that you have to pay attention to every detail is true, but I believe we have a great group with a decent attitude.
To succeed in competition, I believe attention to detail and efficiency are vital. Being more effective in front of the goals is where I believe we can make the most progress in the coming weeks.
To be successful at the highest level, efficiency is essential, as there are fewer opportunities to score and more to allow goals.
“I think we have the quality in the squad to play and win that competition, but we have to improve,” he said. “Tomorrow is a great opportunity to get the first points in the competition, to move forward, and to improve.”
