At the Australian Open, Andre Agassi makes a rare revelation about his marriage to Steffi Graf.
Amidst his Australian Open performance, Andre Agassi has provided a unique glimpse into his friendship with fellow tennis legend Steffi Graf. The Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, which is awarded to the men’s champion, was delivered onto Rod Laver Arena on Sunday night by the legendary American tennis player, who is attending Australia’s first grand slam of the year.
He was escorted out by Australian star Ash Barty, who was holding the Daphne Ackhurst Memorial Cup, the trophy awarded to the female champion. After that, Agassi watched from the stands as Novak Djokovic defeated Dino Prizmic in their first-round match, but not before the adolescent Croatian forced the teenager to play four sets.
Agassi has also been making the rounds in the Australian media. On Monday morning, he discussed his marriage in an interview with Melbourne’s 101.9 The Fox radio host Brendan Fevola. Known for their intense privacy, Agassi and Graf have provided very little information about their marriage in the 23 years that they have been together.
However, Agassi confided in Fevola and shared some of the things he had discovered about Graf and marriage in general. The 53-year-old stated, “You pick your battles.” “The first battle that I didn’t pick was bringing home my trophies, because if I bring home my trophies she brings home her trophies.”
Throughout his remarkable career, Agassi won 60 trophies on the ATP tour in addition to eight grand slam singles championships. But in comparison to his famed wife, his accomplishments pale in comparison. Graf is the third-most successful female athlete with 22 grand slam singles titles, behind only Margaret Court (24) and Serena Williams (23). On the WTA circuit, she also captured 107 singles titles and 11 doubles trophies, including one at Wimbledon in 1998.
Agassi isn’t beyond acknowledging that his wife’s career was superior. “It’s just not good math in that respect,” he stated. Since we both have trouble delegating, we really compete over who gets to do what when, and she usually wins. To put it another way, we all strive to exceed each other’s expectations.”
A picture of Andre Agassi at the Australian Open thrills tennis fans
When Agassi uploaded a picture of himself on Sunday kissing a picture of Graf that was hanging on a wall in one of Melbourne Park’s tunnels, tennis fans went crazy. One reader wrote, “This is how a man should celebrate his accomplished wife.” Jaz, the daughter of Agassi and Graf, was one of the numerous people who shared the message.
Graf won the 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1994 Australian Open singles championships. Agassi followed up his achievement with victories in 1995, 2000, 2001, and 2003.
Agassi further stated in the interview with Fevola that, in his opinion, Djokovic is the greatest of all time, surpassing even the greats Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer. Despite the fact that Djokovic has 24 grand slam championships to Nadal’s 22 and Federer’s 20, supporters of the other two players consistently manage to refute Djokovic’s superiority.
