In Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham, winger Luis Diaz had a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside; the audio of the judgement was made public before Man United’s match against Galatasaray.

Rio Ferdinand thinks that if semi-automatic offside technology had been in place on Saturday, the debate surrounding Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal for Liverpool would not have arisen.

In a thrilling 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, the winger for Liverpool had a goal disallowed for offside. The first call of “offside” was reviewed by VAR, however a misunderstanding between VAR and the referee led to the wrong result.

BREAKING: Liverpool FC's scandal has prompted Manchester United veteran Rio Ferdinand to criticize VAR.

The PGMOL, which represents referees, released the VAR assistants’ audio recordings on Tuesday night, showing that they agreed with the on-field judgement that the player was onside. Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand weighed in after hearing the footage to express his disappointment in the group’s vote against partially automated systems.

“This is high level stuff, this is the Premier League, beamed around the world, huge investment in our game,” Ferdinand said to TNT Sports. “As a former player who is now a member of the media, I want to feel like I have some stake in this.

The Premier League voted against implementing the technology because they felt it wasn’t ready for prime time. We wouldn’t be here worrying about this if they’d just allowed this in, that’s for sure.

Liverpool issued a statement demanding the release of the audio recordings to offer clarity quickly after the wrong decision was revealed. The team managed by Jurgen Klopp said they will “explore the range of options available” after saying the decision “undermined sporting integrity.”
