Lucas Giolito of the Red Sox underwent surgery for an elbow injury and avoided Tommy John

Lucas Giolito, the starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, handled his elbow problem without going overboard.

The Red Sox declared on Wednesday that Giolito avoided Tommy John surgery by repairing his right elbow’s ulnar collateral ligament with an internal brace on Tuesday.

This offseason, Giolito inked a one-year contract with the Red Sox that included a player option for the 2025 campaign. When ESPN’s Jeff Passan revealed last week that he was battling with a partially ruptured ulnar collateral ligament and a flexor strain that necessitated surgery and might force him to miss the entire season, his 2024 campaign was ruined before it ever started.

Giolito’s recuperation schedule was not disclosed by the Red Sox, but CJ Haddad of MLB.com pointed out that he is still probably going to miss the whole 2024 season. With Tuesday’s treatment, he has an opportunity to recuperate completely in time for the 2025 campaign to begin.

Along with relievers Cooper Criswell and Liam Hendriks—the latter of whom is also expected to miss the bulk of this season following Tommy John surgery—Giolito was one of just three free agents signed by Boston this offseason.

While playing for the Chicago White Sox in 2019, Giolito was selected as an All-Star, but his output drastically decreased the next season. He spent the year playing for the Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Angels, and White Sox.
